PITIK-BULAG: Crossing to the Other Side.
If our hearts are sincere, humble, and open, we can easily know God’s will. But doing what He requires from us is a different thing. This is where our difficulty lies.
In our gospel, knowing the will of God compels us to leave our comfort zones and cross to the other side. For self-actualization, fulfillment and miracle do happen not in our comfort zones, but outside. There’s no growth in our comfort zones.
But the journey to the other side requires us to traverse the sea of challenges and risks. The disciples, in their desire to follow Jesus, have decided to cross the lake. But great fear distracted them. Our gospel today gave us the perfect ingredients for perfect fear: it’s evening, dangerous sea, and strong winds. Plus the fact that they were already rowing for five miles in the middle of the sea without Jesus. They were tired of sailing. Fear and fatigue could cause hopelessness.
Fear hinders us to leave our comfort zones. But not all fears are real. Many of our fears are useless, baseless, and nothing. One of the antidotes against fear is a genuine prayer. Like in our gospel, in our prayer, we hear the Lord telling us, “IT IS ME. DO NOT BE AFRAID.” (John 6:20). Two short but powerful words, enough to give us the courage to cross to the other side and do the will of God.
The gospel today gives us two spiritual gems:
First, WE COULD WALK ON WATER. Like Jesus, we could walk on water. Peter did it. Through the help of God, we could overcome our fear and cross to the other side. Many of the sea monsters in our minds are not real. They are simply useless and baseless fear, created by our anxious minds and lack of trust. The evil has no power over us, he gets his power from our fears. And sad to say, we love entertaining fake news and believe in them. This bad news and fake news are seeds of confusion and fear. Never allow them to dominate your mind. Simply ignore them.
Second, BRING JESUS WITH YOU ALWAYS AND YOU WILL BE FINE. Upon the disciples’ invitation, without thinking twice, Jesus immediately jumped into their boat and reached their destination.
“So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.” (John 6:21).
Never forget to invite our Lord to walk with you every day. With Jesus at our side, we are confident of reaching our destination. The end of the pandemic is nowhere in sight, but His presence in our daily work is enough to give us peace.
What about you? Where is your OTHER SIDE? Where do you feel God is calling you to cross? What are the sea monsters lurking in your heart? What are the challenges and risks you need to face in this time of pandemic? What are your fears? Name them.
