PITIK-BULAG: Embracing the Pandemic.

“We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson.

Our gospel today speaks of Jesus speaking boldly in front of the people and his disciples. Without fear, he spoke the truth about Him as the bread of life. Everyone was shocked by his bold new teaching. In their disbelief and lack of faith to absorb the truth, they had left him in disgust.

Today, some of us are questioning the will of God and his love for us. We cannot understand why God allowed this pandemic to destroy our beautiful life and to let us suffer without end. After more than a year, until now, we cannot accept the “new normal.”
Covid-19 virus will linger with us for a while until we reach herd immunity, which is beyond us at the moment. In times like this, aside from having a good disposition in facing the challenges of our daily life, we are also asked to embrace the new normal. Denying and resisting it will do more harm than good. Nariyan na sa ating buhay ang pandemya. We need to accept it in order to us to see the NEW GRACES IN THE NEW NORMAL. It’s either you’re not in the boat or you’re in the boat rowing towards adaptability and living with it. The virus needs to mutate in order to survive. We need to mutate too, ahead of the virus, in order to survive. We need to unlearn old tricks and ways of life and learn new ways of thinking, living and surviving.

In the gospel today, the disciples started leaving Jesus for they cannot accept the “new teachings.” In His frustration, Jesus said to the twelve, “What about you? Are you leaving me too?”
The Lord is asking us also, “IN THE MIDST OF THIS PANDEMIC, ARE YOU LEAVING ME TOO?”

Let’s fully embrace the new normal. Nariyan na yan. What’s the point of running away and cursing the darkness? It’s useless licking our wounds and living in our hopelessness and frustrations. Embracing the new normal is the only way to slowly restore our normal life. Resisting the new normal way of living is like a boy crying after losing his favorite toy, without realizing that his parents are offering a better toy fit for his age.

The call today is TO STAY IN THE NOW, COUNT OUR BLESSINGS, AND MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT. We cannot see the graces of God in the now if we still insist on restoring the old normal soon. We are invited to be more patient, resilient, and enthusiastic in facing our day-to-day challenges. Stop complaining and comparing. We are asked to stretch ourselves more. Sacrifice more. And endure more for the sake of our future. In the end, our effort will have some good results. It will bring some semblance of normal life.

Every day is a new beginning. Let’s accept the new normal as the only key to return to the old normal. Let’s take it slowly. With lots of determination and faith in God, we shall overcome this crisis. But don’t rush it. There’s no quick solution.

At this time, our enemy is not merely the virus, but our hopelessness, boredom, fear, and the desire for a quick solution. In the midst of this pandemic, there’s no quick solution but a call to more sacrifices. While waiting for your vaccination, inject yourself with mega doses of patience, resilience, and peace. This virus is so vicious and dangerous, protecting our inner disposition counts a lot.

In spite of our daily woes, we still have countless graces in our lives. We still have our families and friends, the beautiful morning, birds chirping, laughing of children, peaceful morning, silence in our prayers, food to eat every day, caring people, and many other things. Every morning is a new beginning. It’s not a matter of living in the old normal or new normal, it’s a matter of having faith in God and trusting that everything will be fine today and tomorrow. A new beginning comes when we embrace the present as a grace of God.

Dear God,
let me begin this day
with the right disposition
and slowly embrace the
the present moment.

Let me begin this day
by begging for your guidance.
Let me do something that
I will never regret tonight.

Let me begin this graceful day
by wearing a positive outlook in life.
Let me choose to be happy,
and sustain it through the day.

Let me begin this wonderful day
by releasing all my hurts and pains.
Let me choose to forgive my enemies,
and bring peace in my anxious heart.

Let me begin this blessed day
by loving less of myself and more of others.
Let me choose to be extra kind to everyone,
and be your loving presence to others.

Let me begin this exciting day
by transcending all my fears and anxieties.
Let me choose to leave my comfort zones,
and be more daring to reach the needy.

Let me begin this awesome day
by choosing to know and love you more.
Let me choose to walk the path to holiness,
by carrying my daily cross with gladness.

Let me begin this new day,
by embracing the new normal
as the the only way to bring back
the old normal that I long to see.

Let me begin this day with you,
and let me choose to serve you.
For at the end of this day,
all is worthless without you.

– Pitik-Bulag
