To Please God, Not Men.

One of our human needs is to be part of a family, group of friends, and community. We don’t want to be left out. We desire to be part of a community. We like the feeling of being needed and important. It gives us a sense of security, fulfillment, and happiness.
But such desire to “belong” could lead us to please people but displease God. Sometimes, we sacrifice what is “necessary and right” to avoid the rejection and displeasure of others. We may win the hearts of others, but displease God in the process.
In our gospel today, Jesus emphasized the importance of obeying the will of God. Sad to say, sometimes the will of God contradicts the will of the majority. And when our faith is not strong, we may end up joining the majority, and displease God.
Jesus said in our gospel, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those sitting in a circle around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. ANYONE WHO DOES THE WILL OF GOD IS MY BROTHERS, SISTERS, AND MOTHER.'”
Jesus wants us to choose HIS COMPANY and not the others. Pray that God will give us the courage to DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND NOBLE, even it will mean losing friends. We are not alone. Jesus was branded by his relatives as a lunatic (Mark 3:21). We may lose the respect of others, but we gain GOD’S APPROVAL – and gain the membership of GOD’s FAMILY.
