PITIK-BULAG: Wear the Right Garment

Our gospel today was a reaction of Jesus with regard to the unbelieving religious leaders and Jews of his Gospel. They were the first priority of God’s salvific action, yet they ignored His invitation to believe in His message. In the end, the gentiles were invited to God’s flock and considered the downfall of Jerusalem as the punishment by God (Matthew 22:7).

The gospel’s message is crystal clear. God is a generous and loving God. No question about it. Unfortunately, the problem lies in us. We do not know our priorities in life. We spend most of our time on less important matters in life. We are trapped in securing our future on earth, but not of heaven. We are so concerned with our daily routine and forgot to work for treasures in heaven. We forgot the King’s invitation to enjoy His Presence and rejoice with Him. Instead, we set our eyes to our daily toils and concerns.

What is your priority in life? Do you take time to pray, listen to God’s voice, and enjoy His presence? How do you spend your day? Is God’s will your priority? In the gospel reading, are you like those invited by the King who simply ignored His invitation?

Consider the following points in your prayer:

1. THE INITIATIVE COME FROM GOD.

We have a generous God. We are mere creatures of God, yet He prepared a big feast and invited us. He wants our presence in His Son’s banquet. Unfortunately, we failed to recognize the honor being given to us. It’s a blessing. We don’t deserve such an invitation to join the banquet. Yet we ignored it. The initiative comes from God, not from us.

2. THE INVITATION CALLS FOR AN ACTION.

The people’s lack of gratitude to the King who invited them to His feast was unacceptable. When the King started preparing the feast, he knew exactly the quantity of food to be prepared. To say no was to waste the food intended for them. And to say no was to dishonor the host. They already said yes to His invitation, but they decided not to come, merely because of the daily work they need to finish. God’s invitation calls for action. Ignoring his invitation to commune with Him in the banquet of His love is dishonoring HIm.

Are we like them? We are Christians. We already said yes to Christ’s invitation to join His banquet and His presence. Yet, we are also distracted by our daily works and routine. We tend to say no to God’s invitation to commune with Him in prayer because are busy at the moment. We set aside our religious obligation and spiritual growth in exchange for earthly concern. We proclaim that God is our priority, yet our actions deny our words. We spend too much time and effort with worldly things and ignored to nourish our spirits.

3. OUR EXCUSE IS NOT ENOUGH.

We said yes to God. We committed ourselves to love Him. Yet, when the time comes to respond to his call or invitation, we found ourselves having lots of lame excuses.

4. WEARING THE RIGHT GARMENT.

Saying yes to God’s invitation is not enough. God would still require us to wear the necessary garment that will fit the given affair. We are the disciples of Jesus. We are Christians. Then wear the right uniform or garment of a disciple or a Christian. Wear the garment of holiness, humility, trust, courage, selflessness, service, forgiveness, and others. Know the occasion, discern, and wear the right attitude or disposition of the moment.
