PITIK-BULAG: Eucharist: The Best Bread Ever.

Many of us are bread persons. We love to eat all kinds of bread at any time of the day. Compared to rice, bread is easy to bring and easy to eat, especially on a long journey. With a piece of bread in our bag, we are confident we’ll never get hungry.

But what’s your BREAD FOR YOUR SOUL? What keeps you going through the day? In times of pandemic, what is the daily spiritual bread that sustains you to survive the new normal? Nourishing our spirit is a must in our present situation. Remember how the angel asked Elijah to EAT WELL for the journey will be very long?

“The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, ‘Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.’ He got up, and ate and drank.” (1 King 19:7-8).

In our gospel, Jesus introduced himself as the BREAD OF LIFE. He is not just the bread of the day, the bread of the week, month, or year. He is the BREAD OF OUR LIFE! He said, “Whoever comes to me will never get hunger, and whoever believes in me, will never get thirsty.” (John 6:35).

In times of pandemic, we are on a long difficult journey without seeing the end. For more than a year now, we are journeying together as we walk through this pandemic. We don’t see the end of this dark tunnel, thus we are challenged to sustain our energy to survive this difficult ordeal. In times like this, we need the most nutritious “spiritual bread” that we can get to sustain us in this long difficult journey. Thus, we need food from heaven that will give us renewed strength and courage to walk with determination and perseverance. Eat well. To give up is not an option.

A BLESSING FROM HEAVEN. We are blessed to have the Eucharist in our midst. In this crisis, we may not the opportunity to attend the daily or Sunday Mass physically, but God gave us the Online Masses as an option to join the Eucharistic Celebration any time of the day. Although limited in nature, in faith, we can still receive the Presence of Jesus and His grace by attending prayerfully the online Holy Mass and receive Jesus spiritually.

Any day and any time of the week, we can attend the Mass and receive Jesus, the BREAD OF LIFE. We are deeply consoled and satisfied by the online Mass. Receiving Jesus spiritually may not be ideal, but at the moment, due to the pandemic restrictions, we abide by it and receive Jesus in faith.

Through the online Mass, Jesus is giving himself as our daily spiritual food for our hungry souls. It consoles us that we are not alone. The online Mass brings us together. As we spiritually partake the heavenly bread, we are reminded of how Jesus had embraced his cross. Such remembering invites us too to embrace our daily cross also.

How often do you attend the online Mass? Do you have a longing to receive Jesus spiritually in the Holy Communion? Those who solemnly receive the communion spiritually will be fully satisfied and nourished. Jesus is the Bread of life. He said, COME AND BELIEVE, AND YOU WILL NEVER GET HUNGRY AND THIRSTY. (John 6:35).

Do you recall how Jesus healed the son of an official?

“The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.” (John 4:43-54).

We should ardently desire to attend the Eucharist every day. We are not alone. In this crisis, God is with us. The grace of God still prevails. The online Masses all over the world is a manifestation of God’s Presence wherever we go. It takes faith to receive and be nourished spiritually by the Eucharist. God transcends physical reception. God is trying to reach us through our faith.

With the Eucharist in our midst (physical or online), we are confident of not getting hungry in our journey.

O Jesus,
remind us to seek you every day.
In this time of crisis, we are hungry
and thirsty for your Holy Presence.
Lead us closer to the Holy Eucharist,
and allow us to receive Jesus spiritually.
This journey is not a walk in the park.
The long path is overwhelming for us.
We need to stop and rest for a while.
We need to take a deep breath,
recuperate, be nourished,
and be filled with new energy.
O Jesus, we are deeply grateful
for your presence in the Eucharist.
We are deeply blessed and consoled.
Your presence in the Holy Eucharist,
satisfies our hungry spirits
and encourages us
to feed others as well.
Amen.
