PITIK-BULAG: Looking for Extra Oil

Foresight and readiness count a lot in planning for our future. They give us a sense of security and preparedness for any unforeseen situation that may come to us. As the boy scouts motto would say, “Laging handa!” Are you ready?

Our gospel today reminds us of the call to be prepared for the coming of the Lord. We don’t know when will He come. We do not know when is our time of death. Nobody knows. Our death is like a thief in the evening, it will come sooner or later, thus, readiness is necessary.

The gospel presents two groups: The wise and the foolish. The 5 wise women were prudent enough to bring extra oil for the possibility of delay of the groom’s arrival. They know their important role in lighting the way of the couple and to bring cheers to the wedding occasion. Nothing would stop them to provide festive mood for the newly wedded couple. On the other hand, the 5 women were foolish and thoughtless. They did not see the possibility of a delay. They did not have the foresight to prepare for the worst and save themselves from shame. And so when the groom was delayed, they were unprepared to respond to the situation. Unfortunately, it was too late for them to buy oil, or what’s the use of having extra oil if the bride and groom were in the house already? As we used to say, “Aanhin pa ang damo kung patay na ang kabayo?”

What saves the five wise women is their extra oil. Oil is necessary to fuel the lamp and light the way of the newly wedded couple. The bright light brings a festive mood to the celebration. In our faith, the oil mentioned here is the Holy Spirit. It could also mean faith, hope, and charity. We need to have them in our lives, not only the regular doze, but we need extra of it. The oil of charity, faith, and hope brings a bright light to our spirits and lights us closer to the Lord.

What brings joy to our Lord, the groom, is not only to love Him but to love Him more. What makes us secure in this life and life after is our potential to do MORE IN THE NAME OF LOVE. In the Ignatian spirituality, we called it MAGIS which means “more.” We don’t settle for ordinary or regular or “just enough” … we go for EXTRA MILE … extra love, extra patience, extra forgiveness, extra effort, extra giving of ourselves for the sake of others.

The Lord is inviting us to be prudent and thoughtful in this life. To have the foresight to see that preparation for the next life is a must. Nobody knows the time of our date with the Lord. But we don’t want to be caught flat-footed and unprepared for His coming! The main lesson of the gospel today is preparedness and our responsibility to secure extra oil for our eternal security. With our extra oil of love, faith, and hope …. we assured ourselves of a happy meeting with the Lord in His heavenly banquet.

What about you? Are you part of the foolish group or the wise group? Are you wise enough to take some extra oil with you? Is magis or having “more” part of your goals in life?
