PITIK-BULAG: Set the Word on Fire!
Jesus is very passionate about fulfilling His mission, which is doing the will of His Father. But doing God’s will would entail a lot of things, including embracing suffering and death. Yet, Jesus is determined to embrace everything, even death on the cross. His mission is crystal clear for Him: to set the WORLD ON FIRE and KEEP IT BURNING! His determination is clear cut!
When the Lord speaks of setting the world on fire, it means a lot of things. Fire is very powerful. It is one of the three elements of the earth. It symbolizes many things, including passion, desire, rebirth, resurrection, eternity, destruction, hope, hell, and purification.
When Jesus dreams of setting the world on fire, He may mean the following things:
1. IGNITE one’s deepest desires to seek, love, and serve God.
2. PURIFY one’s heart of impure motivations and selfishness.
3. BAPTIZE everyone with the Holy Spirit and make His disciples bold and courageous in preaching the gospel of love.
4. LIGHT THE WORLD. Rekindle the fire of love in one’s heart and be the bearers of Good News.
5. BE THE PRESENCE OF GOD. In the Old Testament, the wall of fire led and guarded the Israelites in the evening. In the New Testament, the disciples received the Holy Spirit as tongues of fire.
But aside from reiterating His deepest desire, Jesus reminds us that SUFFERING AND TOTAL SELF-DENIAL are parts and parcels of LOVING. He willfully embraced these things as His own baptism of fire. Something that we are asked to embraced too as His followers. Following Him may bring division and conflict with our loved ones and with everyone. But the Lord encourages us to remain faithful and committed in our faith. This is the heavy price that we need to pay as His disciples.
Look at your life now. What is your deepest desire? Are you willing to join Jesus in setting the world on fire by bringing faith, hope, and love to humanity? Are you willing to embrace suffering as part and parcel of discipleship?
Are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit to burn all your sins, imperfections, and selfishness? Will you allow the Holy Spirit to rekindle your passion to know, love, and serve God?
When the disciples received the Holy Spirit, they left their comfort zones with great courage and boldness. Deep in their hearts, they wanted to do one thing in their lives … to seek God’s will and do it well.
Let’s recall the prayer of Saint Paul to the Ephesians: (Ephesians 3:14-21) in our first reading.
1. That God may accord you with POWER through His Spirit in the inner self.
2. That Christ may DWELL in your hearts through faith.
3. Rooted and grounded in God’s love, that God may grant you an UNDERSTANDING of the divine mystery.
4. To KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST so that you may be filled with the FULLNESS OF GOD.
In our society’s darkness moment, confusion, and chaos … have you heard the Lord’s calling to join Him in His enterprise of SETTING THE WORLD ON FIRE AND KEEP IT BURNING!
