PITIK-BULAG: The Third Betrayer.

The gospel today brings us closer to the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross. The Lord was in great pain for his impending shameful and painful death. Yet his greatest pain was not the shame of dying on the cross, but the betrayal and abandonment of his beloved disciples and followers. What he desired from them was their commitment to accompany him until death, but they were not yet ready. The Lord said, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” (John 13:33).

THE FIRST TWO BETRAYERS. The gospel today explicitly tells us of two betrayals – Judas and Peter. Jesus knew the moments of betrayal were coming, yet without any signs of anger and frustration, he lovingly accepted the will of the Father. He was committed to fulfilling God’s and glorify His name. He was resolved not to betray his Father. Nothing could stop him, even his deepest fear, frustrations, and pains. Peter would betray Jesus because of fear, while Judas would betray Jesus because of his frustrations. Judas thought that Jesus would be the King that would overthrow the Roman empire.

THE THIRD BETRAYER. While reading the gospel, it dawned on me, “What about me?” I realized that I am the third betrayer. I also betrayed Jesus, not only once or thrice, but many times in my life. Like Peter and Judas, I am also guilty of abandoning Jesus.

Like Judas, I have so many expectations with God. I feel frustrated when God will not answer my prayers. I have betrayed Him every time I questioned His will. And sold my faith in Him as I prioritized material wealth, honor, and power more than seeking God’s will.

Like Peter, I have many fears and anxieties in life too. In good times, I also said, “I will lay down my life for you.” (John 13:37). But when bad times come, my fear overcomes my commitment to stay with Jesus, and leave Him.

But in spite of my shortcomings and lack of commitment, Jesus is not condemning me. With his everlasting unconditional love, He continues to give me another chance to amend my life and re-commit my life again to the mission.

Dear Jesus,
when John asked you,
“Master, who will betray you?”
I realized it was not
only Judas and Peter,
but you’re also looking at ME.
Yes, I’M GUILTY of betraying you.
I am not true to my words.
Yet, I don’t feel
any condemnation.
I betrayed you
countless times
in my daily life,
yet your never-ending mercy
is always at my door side.
O Lord, give me the courage
to STAND by with your side.
And not abandon you
in times of temptations,
trials, and persecutions.
Let me stand firm
and be committed
to love you faithfullly.
O Lord, I’m tired of betraying you.
Let me walk with you always
and deliver me from all kinds
of temptations and sins.
Amen.
